BEACH AT PALENQUE ANCHORAGE

BEACH AT PUNTA PALENQUE

18.14.082N / 070.10.152W (anchorage)

Puerto Palenque, just west of Punta Palenque, is a wonderful stop and a great anchorage, provided that the wind is out of the NE or E. Any wind from the south makes this anchorage untenable. Anchor west behind the small reef and as far north as you can in 6’ to 10’ of water The further north you anchor, the better is the protection that the reef affords. This anchorage is not actually Puerto Palenque. It is just west of the commercial wharf which is not suitable for pleasure craft.

REEF AT PALENQUE

You will probably be visited by a young coast guard (marina Guerra) officer.
You will find him polite and helpful. Show him your despacho going east or west. Explain that you are stopping to take a break for the night and will move to your “despacho destination” in the morning.  The fisherman will come out to offer you fresh fish and lobster.

I love stopping at Palenque, when the wind is right. It is pretty with panoramic views of the Caribbean and a nice little beach. Buy some fish, take a swim and relax. YOU CAN GO EAST OR WEST MANANA, si tu quieres!
