    PORT OF AZUA (Puerto Viejo)

    Puerto Viejo de Azua (east side of the bay, North)

    This is a commercial facility and not set up for the cruising sailor.

    Port of Azua was built in the 1959 by Rafael Leonidas Trujillo. The Harbor has two terminals, one of those is utilized by Compañía de Gas Licuado de Petróleo Opuvisa (Petroleum Gas Company) which has installed containers of gas.

    The other terminal is used for exportation of fruits (bananas), minerals and others, and occasionally General Cargo operations are handled too.

    In addition there is a naval base in the harbor. The entire northern bay is set up for drug interdiction illegal immigration control.   Should you choose to go up and enter the harbor, or anchor a few miles east at the northern part of the bay (Playa Caracoles), the chances are you will be boarded by the coast guard as well as other agencies.  Best you simply avoid this area.
